Sneaker crease repair

Your creases
aren't
permanent.

A crease is a fold, not a stain. The Shoe Decreaser puts controlled heat through a damp cloth so the leather relaxes and the toe box lies flat again. About ten minutes a shoe, on your own counter.

Results vary with material, how long the crease has been set and how deep the fold runs. Old, hard creases usually soften rather than vanish outright. We would rather tell you that up front.

01

The problem

Why sneakers
crease

Understanding the fold is most of the fix. Three things cause it, and only one of them is bad luck.

Flex point

It folds where you bend it

Every step bends the shoe in the same place, across the ball of your foot. Leather has no memory. It folds where it's asked to fold, over and over, until that fold becomes the path of least resistance and the upper stops springing back.

Empty space

Nothing holding the toe box up

An empty toe box has nothing supporting it. Shoes half a size too big crease faster, because there's more room for the upper to collapse into when you push off. The leather isn't weak, it's just unsupported.

Moisture

It sets in whatever shape it dries

Leather softens when damp and hardens as it dries. A pair kicked off and left in a crumpled heap sets crumpled. That's also the loophole: what heat and moisture set, heat and moisture can reset.

02

The tool

Controlled heat,
on a curve

A clothes iron is flat and runs hot enough to shrink and shine a leather panel. This is shaped for the job.

The plate is 3.15 × 5.5″ and curved to match a toe box and heel counter, so pressure lands evenly instead of on one edge. Four fixed temperatures mean you match heat to material rather than guessing, which is where most home attempts go wrong.

The method

Three steps,
done properly

The technique matters more than the tool. Rush any of these and you get a shiny patch instead of a flat toe box.

Step 1

Clean it, then fill it

Heat sets whatever is on the surface, so lift the dirt first. Then pack the toe box: a shoe tree, or rolled socks at a push. You need something firm to press against, or the upper just folds the other way.

Step 2

Damp cloth on top

Cotton, wrung out, damp but not dripping. The plate never touches the shoe. Under heat the moisture turns to steam, and the steam is what actually relaxes the fibres.

Step 3

Short passes, then cool

Five to ten seconds, lift, check. Repeat rather than leaning on it: the crease fades over a few passes. Then leave the shoe stuffed until completely cool, because that's when the new shape sets.

Questions

Before

Anything we haven't covered, email info@refreshmykicks.com and a person will answer.

Not if you follow the method. The two things that cause damage are heat applied directly to the upper, and heat left in one spot too long. Always work through a damp cloth, always use short passes, and start on the lowest setting that's doing anything.

On a pair you're nervous about, test the inside of the heel first. It's a panel nobody sees.

No, and we'd rather say so before you order. Heat permanently flattens the nap on suede and nubuck, and knit or mesh uppers can melt. The Decreaser is for leather, synthetic leather and canvas.

For suede and knit, the Anti Crease Preventer is the honest answer. It stops the fold forming rather than trying to undo it.

The crease comes back with wear, because the cause hasn't changed: your foot still bends in the same place. What changes is the starting point. Most people re-press every few weeks, and it takes less time each round.

Using a shoe tree between wears makes the biggest difference to how long it holds.

It will soften it. A fold that's been set for years has broken down the finish along the crease line, and heat can't rebuild that. Expect a deep, hard crease to become a faint line rather than disappear.

Fresh creases in good leather come out almost completely.

You need something firm inside the shoe while you press, otherwise the upper has nothing to flatten against. Tightly rolled socks work for a first attempt.

A wooden tree does the job better and keeps working after, holding the shape while the shoe dries out from the day's wear.
